Migration Studies Unit
 |
The Migration Studies Unit (MSU) was founded by research students and academics in the Spring of 2007 at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where the Unit is based. The MSU promotes the cross-disciplinary study of migration. Led by the efforts of students and academics working together, the Unit engages and offers a network for scholars concerned with migration studies — taking advantage of growing interest in the field and a unique location in the cosmopolitan crossroads of London.

IMPALA DatabasePrincipal Investigator
IMPALA will be the world’s first database of international migration policy and law analysis (IMPALA). Consisting of faculty from Harvard, LSE, Sydney, Amsterdam and Luxembourg Universities in different disciplines, the IMPALA Database is a large-N, cross-national, cross-institutional, cross-disciplinary, project on comparative immigration policy. The database, which can be used for both qualitative and quantitative research across a range of disciplines, improves existing databases on policy, such as the Freedom House Index, and captures trends in immigration selection, integration and rights review policies across 20 OECD countries, across time.

International Migrants Bill of RightsPrincipal Investigator
Initiated by the UN’s Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, this effort unites law scholars from Georgetown University Law Center and Hebrew University with political scientists from the London School of Economics to consider the implementation of new migrants rights agendas. I currently oversee the Peter Sutherland Committee on International Migration Policy Implementation at the LSE, which brings together students and political scientists who examine legislation and enforcement of international statutes.

Harvard Islam and the West WorkshopWorkshop Co-Chair
The Islam in the West Program aims to contribute to the global debate on Islam through an in-depth examination of the religious, political, and social situations of American and European Muslims, and by illuminating the relationships of these communities with the Muslim world at large. I currently co-chair the program’s workshop with Jocelyne Cesari, and am collaborating on current efforts to survey Western Muslim religiosity and political behavior.

Politics of MigrationPrincipal Investigator
This project seeks to explain contemporary and historical migration phenomena and contemporary policy responses. It employs multidisciplinary material to address the diverse impacts of human migration from a political science perspective. It also develops teaching materials to accompany ever-growing demand for interdisciplinary migration studies instruction—the first of their kind.
Social Cultures ObservatoryResearch Associate
The Social Cultures Observatory is a joint initiative between LSE Global Governance and the Cambridge University Department of Social Anthropology. Its interdisciplinary agenda explores how culture is contesting, amplifying, and altering the nature, direction and understandings of globalisation processes. These processes are discussed from the perspective of diverse audiences, including the academy, business, policymakers, cultural institutions, and community leaders. It aims to change the terms of debate, and to suggest new ways of conceptualizing the links between cultural policy and economic and social well-being.
New Americans InitiativeConsultant
The New Americans Initiative is a non-profit partnership between the State of Illinois and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). It aids migrants in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen with free legal advice and assistance with government forms. It also features an education program that teaches civics to future American citizens. I serve as a consultant.
